The Zagorochoria — 46 traditional stone villages scattered across the Zagori mountains north of Ioannina — are among the finest examples of vernacular architecture in Greece. The villages are built entirely of the local grey limestone, with slate roofs, arched bridges over the mountain streams, and large mansions built by merchants who travelled and returned wealthy. The whole area is a UNESCO Global Geopark.
The most visited villages are Monodendri (the main starting point for the Vikos Gorge hike), Tsepelovo, Aristi, and Papigo, each with its own character. The stone bridges scattered across the region — many built in the 18th and 19th centuries without mortar — are particularly beautiful. The best time to visit is spring when the wildflowers are out, or autumn when the forests turn. In summer the villages are popular with Greek weekenders; in winter many close down entirely.
