Temple of Aphrodite at Mesi

About 14 km east of Skala Kalloni, near the village of Mesi, the remains of an ancient sanctuary to Aphrodite sit on a low promontory overlooking the southern shore of the Gulf of Kalloni. The site was excavated in the 20th century and yielded finds dating from the Archaic period through to Roman times, indicating continuous worship over many centuries. The remains visible today are fragmentary — column bases, foundation walls, and scattered stone — but the setting overlooking the gulf is atmospheric.

The temple is not extensively signposted and access involves a short walk across rough ground; it is worth checking locally or at the Mytilene Archaeological Museum for current access conditions before making the trip. The drive along the southern shore of the gulf to reach it is scenic.
