Lefkes

Lefkes is the most atmospheric village on Paros, perched in the hills of the interior at an altitude that keeps it noticeably cooler than the coast. For much of the Middle Ages it was the capital of the island — the inland position offering protection from the pirate raids that plagued coastal settlements. The marble-paved lanes are genuinely narrow and genuinely old, flanked by two-storey houses with wooden balconies.

The village is best explored on foot. A Byzantine marble path — the old mule route linking Lefkes to Prodromos — makes a good walk in either direction. The twin-towered church of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) in the main plateia was built in 1830 and is one of the finest churches on the island. There are a couple of kafeneions and tavernas around the square where you can sit after the walk. Lefkes is about twenty kilometres from Parikia, an easy drive or scooter ride.
