Archaeological Museum of Pella

Museum housing the finest pebble mosaics and sculpture from the ancient Macedonian capital

The museum adjacent to the archaeological site holds the best of what has been excavated from Pella over decades of work: marble sculpture, bronze weapons, gold jewellery, coins, and above all the pebble mosaics. Several mosaic panels have been relocated here from their original floors, allowing you to study the detail up close in good light without crouching over an outdoor shelter.

The standout piece is the 4th-century BC mosaic depicting a lion hunt — two men attacking a lion with spears, rendered in natural pebbles in shades of white, grey, black, and brown. It is startlingly vigorous for a floor decoration. The museum also covers the broader history of Macedonian royal culture through finds from the site, giving context to Alexander the Great's upbringing here before his world-changing campaigns.
