Church of the Anastasis

The Church of the Anastasis (Resurrection) tops the Vrodado hill — the Orthodox counterpart to the Catholic Ano Syros on the opposite side of the harbour. The blue-domed church is the most photographed building in Ermoupoli and the climb up through the stepped alleys of Vrodado is nearly as rewarding as the destination.

The interior is richly decorated in the Orthodox tradition, with gilded iconostasis and oil paintings covering much of the wall space. The church is generally open in the mornings and evenings, particularly around service times. From the churchyard, you get one of the best views in Ermoupoli — the harbour below, the ferry terminal, and Ano Syros on the opposing hill, with the dome of San Giorgio catching the same afternoon light.

A story
The dome of the Anastasis is the most visible landmark on the Vrodado hill and appears in virtually every photograph of Ermoupoli. When the church was built in the mid-19th century, the Orthodox community of Syros was establishing its identity against the older Catholic presence on the island — the placement on a prominent hilltop was deliberate.
