Archaeological Museum of Syros

The Archaeological Museum of Syros occupies a neoclassical building just off Plateia Miaouli and houses finds from around the island and the broader Cyclades, from the Neolithic period through to Roman times. The collection is not enormous, but it is well-curated and the Cycladic figurines alone justify the visit.

Beyond the figurines, the museum contains Geometric-period pottery, early Cycladic jewellery, and objects recovered from the ancient settlement at Kastri in the north of the island — one of the most important Early Bronze Age sites in the Aegean. The signage is in Greek and English. Opening hours are typically morning and early afternoon; check locally as hours vary by season.

A story
The museum's prize exhibit is a collection of Cycladic figurines from the 3rd millennium BC — the minimalist marble sculptures whose influence on Brancusi and Picasso is well-documented. They were found in local cemeteries and represent one of the earliest artistic traditions in European history.
