Cameo Island

Cameo Island is the small wooded islet immediately offshore of Agios Sostis Beach, connected to the mainland by a long wooden footbridge. There is no proper village or settlement on the islet — instead, the whole rocky outcrop is operated as a single beach club with a cocktail bar, a couple of restaurants and a string of sunbeds tucked into miniature coves around the shore.

Entry is free in the morning before about 11; from then on there is a per-person charge that includes a sunbed, towel and a drink. The water around the island is clear, deep and good for swimming and snorkelling, and the rocks on the seaward side make for one of the best sunset spots on Zakynthos. The bar runs late-afternoon parties through summer.

A story
The bridge across to Cameo is technically inside the National Marine Park, but the island itself is privately leased and run as a cocktail bar — one of the few permitted commercial uses of the protected coastline. The arrangement predates the park's creation in 1999 and is grandfathered in.
