Laganas

Laganas is the large beach resort village two kilometres east of Agios Sostis — the loud, neon-lit hub of Zakynthos's package-holiday south coast. A nine-kilometre strip of sand backed by a single long street of bars, fast-food, tattoo parlours and clubs. It is the busiest nightlife on the island and the place to come if you want a thumping summer bar scene; it is the place to avoid if you came for the turtles.

Laganas Beach itself is part of the National Marine Park and turtle nests are marked off in cages on the sand. The contrast — sunbeds and DJ sets a few metres from protected nesting sites — is one of the more uncomfortable juxtapositions in Greek tourism. Visit in the morning if at all; the strip after dark is loud, drunk and aimed at a very particular nineteen-year-old British market.
