Sea Turtle Watching

The waters around Kalamaki are part of the prime feeding and nesting grounds for the loggerhead turtle, and boat trips from the village offer the best chance to see turtles in the water. Several operators run morning trips to the Bay of Laganas, where turtles congregate to feed on seagrass. The boats are required to keep a respectful distance and switch off engines when turtles surface.

The National Marine Park has zoned the bay to protect nesting areas, and licensed operators know the zones and the rules. Trips typically last two to three hours and combine turtle watching with a stop for swimming. Choose an operator who stays at a respectful distance from the animals and avoids anchoring in turtle feeding areas — the quality of the experience and the welfare of the turtles depend on it.
