Blue Caves

The Blue Caves at Cape Skinari on the northern tip of Zakynthos are among the most photographed natural features in the Ionian islands. The sea has carved a series of arches and chambers into the white limestone cliffs, and the combination of crystal-clear water and reflected light produces an extraordinary cobalt and turquoise glow inside the caves. Boat trips run from Agios Nikolaos harbour and take about 30 minutes to reach the site.

The boats are small enough to enter the main chambers at calm water; passengers can swim inside the caves. The trip typically combines the Blue Caves with a stop at Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) further south along the west coast — one of the most dramatic beaches in Greece, accessible only by sea, where the rusting hull of a grounded freighter sits on blinding white pebbles surrounded by vertical limestone cliffs. From Tsilivi, the drive to Agios Nikolaos takes about 35 minutes.

A story
The blue colour inside the caves is produced by refracted light rather than any pigment in the rock: sunlight enters through submerged arches and bounces off the white limestone seabed below, creating an intense electric-blue glow that illuminates the water from underneath. The effect is strongest between 10am and 2pm when the sun is high.
