Solomos Square

Solomos Square is the main public space of Zakynthos Town, a wide neoclassical plaza a block back from the harbour with a statue of the poet Dionysios Solomos at its centre. The square was entirely rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake and has a formal, orderly feel — the colonnaded buildings that line it give it the look of a planned administrative centre more than an organic old town, which is exactly what it is.

The Byzantine Museum and the Solomos Museum both open onto or near the square, making it the natural starting point for any cultural tour of the town. The evening promenade (volta) brings locals out to the square and the surrounding streets in the hour before dinner, following a custom that has survived every earthquake and reconstruction the island has seen.
