Bükfürdő Thermal & Spa

The Bükfürdő Thermal & Spa complex is the reason most people come to this corner of western Hungary, and it does not disappoint. Spread across 18 hectares, it offers 34 pools ranging from cool splash pools and a wave pool to very hot medicinal soaking baths where the water temperature hovers around 36–38°C. An outdoor adventure section with slides and a children's pirate ship is open May to September; the covered indoor pools and an extensive sauna world — Finnish sauna, steam bath, infra sauna, and an outdoor ice plunge pool — operate year-round.

The medicinal section is where the serious soakers come. The alkali-bicarbonate water has genuine anti-inflammatory properties, and the complex has a registered medical centre offering treatments for musculoskeletal and joint conditions. Weekends bring families and day-trippers from Szombathely and Sopron; come on a weekday if you want the outdoor pools with more room. The spa is within easy walking distance of most hotels in Bükfürdő.

A story
The waters of Bükfürdő were discovered in 1957 when drillers boring for oil struck a hot mineral spring at 1,282 metres depth. The local authorities quickly pivoted from petroleum to thermal tourism, and within a decade an entire resort village had been built from scratch around the wells. The spring water is categorised as Hungary's most mineralised medicinal water, with exceptionally high levels of fluorine, calcium, and magnesium.
