Western Hungarian spa village built around mineral springs discovered during oil drilling
Bükfürdő is one of Hungary's most popular thermal spa resorts, a purpose-built village around a cluster of mineral-rich springs on the flat country of western Hungary, about 35 km north of Szombathely and just 15 km from the Austrian border. The waters were discovered by accident in 1957 during oil drilling, and within a decade Bükfürdő had been built from scratch as a spa town — today the Bükfürdő Thermal & Spa complex is one of the largest bath facilities in the country, with 34 pools ranging from warm outdoor sunning baths to very hot mineral soaks to rapids, slides, and whirlpools for children.
It is a genuine destination resort rather than a sightseeing town — people come here to soak, eat, and sleep, and most of the village is given over to hotels, pensions, and restaurants arranged around the baths. The spa's medical wing offers registered treatments for musculoskeletal complaints; the mineral content of the water here is the highest of any medicinal spring in Hungary.
Combine a visit with a day trip to the walled medieval town of Kőszeg (20 km south), the baroque palace of Nagycenk (the Széchenyi family seat, 35 km north), or the well-preserved old town of Sopron an hour to the north.

Day Trips
Bükfürdő sits in an unusually rich corner of western Hungary for day excursions. The medieval walled town of Kőszeg is 20 km to the south — its Old Town is one of the best-preserved in Hungary, with baroque architecture and a famous fortress where a handful of Hungarian knights held off the Ottoman army in 1532. Sopron, 46 km north and reached in under an hour, has the largest concentration of historic buildings in Hungary outside Budapest, plus good wine from the Fertőmelléki wine region.
Nagycenk, 35 km north, has the baroque Széchenyi family palace and the charming Nagycenk Museum Railway — a narrow-gauge line running through the estate, operated partly by children. It pairs naturally with a visit to the nearby Fertőd Palace (Esterházy Palace), arguably Hungary's most impressive baroque country seat, where Haydn spent most of his career.
