The land around Bugac is part of Kiskunság National Park, a patchwork of alkaline grasslands, juniper-dotted sand dunes, salt lakes, and ancient floodplain forests stretching across the central section of the Great Hungarian Plain. It is one of Hungary's most important habitats for steppe-adapted wildlife: great bustard, short-toed eagle, rollers, bee-eaters, and in the salt lake areas, avocets and black-winged stilts breed in significant numbers.
Walking tracks lead out from the horse show area into the open puszta, where in summer the mirages (délibáb) shimmer across the flat horizon — an optical phenomenon the Hungarians name with a word of Turkish origin. The landscape can feel desolate and vast in a way that is genuinely striking in a country as densely settled as Hungary. Spring and early summer are the best times for birds; autumn is quieter but the light on the grasslands is beautiful.
