Bugac

Great Hungarian Plain village in Kiskunság grassland, known for csikós horsemen and steppe wildlife.

Bugac is a small village on the Great Hungarian Plain (Alföld), sitting within the Kiskunság National Park — the puszta grasslands that stretch across central Hungary. It is best known as the place where you can watch the famous Hungarian horse shows, where csikós (herdsmen) demonstrate traditional horsemanship including the extraordinary feat of riding five horses at full gallop while standing astride the two rear animals.

The area is genuinely wild: salt lakes, juniper-dotted sand dunes, and open grasslands that feel unchanged for centuries. The Kiskunság National Park around Bugac is one of Hungary's most important steppe habitats, with great bustards, rollers, and seasonal mirages shimmering across the flat plain. Day trips from Budapest or Kecskemét are easy, but a few hours in Bugac — watching the horse show and eating at the traditional csárda on the farm afterwards — makes a satisfying excursion from either city.

Getting There

The nearest city is Kecskemét, about 35 kilometres to the northeast. From Kecskemét, local buses run to Bugac — the journey takes around an hour on winding country roads. By car the drive is straightforward, following Route 54 south and then minor roads west into the puszta.

From Budapest, the easiest approach is to take the train to Kecskemét (about 90 minutes) and then change to the local bus, or to hire a car for the day. Several Budapest tour operators offer day trips that include the horse show, lunch at the csárda, and a walk in Kiskunság National Park, which saves the logistics if you are not driving.

There is no direct rail connection to Bugac village itself.

Things to Do

Bugac has a narrow but authentic range of things to do, all centred on the puszta grasslands and the equestrian culture that has shaped this corner of Hungary for centuries. The horse show is the headline attraction; the national park around it is the reason to linger.
