Víziváros — Watertown — is the historic district that spreads between the castle hill and the Danube, named for the craftsmen and merchants who once lived here in the shadow of the royal residence above. It has a quieter, more residential character than the tourist-heavy hilltop: baroque churches, old burgher houses, and a handful of good restaurants on streets that see few organised tour groups.
The district contains the Christian Museum and the parish church of St. Ignatius of Loyola, one of the better-preserved baroque interiors in northern Hungary. A walk along the Danube embankment from here gives views across to Slovakia and back up to the basilica on the hill.
