Festivals and Events

Budapest Spring Festival (late March) — Two weeks of classical music, opera, ballet, and theatre spread across the city's concert halls and venues. One of Central Europe's major cultural events, drawing international orchestras and performers. The Liszt Academy and the Opera House are the centrepieces.

Sziget Festival (August, Budapest) — One of Europe's largest music festivals, held on Óbuda Island in the Danube for a week in early August. It draws 100,000+ people per day and a strong international lineup. Camp on the island or commute from the city; book accommodation months in advance.

St. Stephen's Day / National Day (August 20) — Hungary's biggest national holiday marks the foundation of the Christian Hungarian state in 1000 AD. Fireworks over the Danube in Budapest draw enormous crowds. The Street of Hungarian Flavours food festival runs around this date, with traditional dishes and regional specialities.

Budapest Wine Festival (September) — Held in the Buda Castle district, with winemakers from across Hungary and beyond. A good chance to try Tokaj, Eger, Villány, and Balaton wines side by side.

Tokaj Harvest Festival (October) — The small town of Tokaj celebrates the grape harvest with processions in traditional costume, street food, and cellar tastings. Quietly one of the best wine events in Central Europe.

Eger Bull's Blood Festival (late September/October) — Eger's cellars in the Valley of Beautiful Women open up for a multi-day tasting event built around Egri Bikavér and other regional wines.

Valley of Arts Festival (Kapolcs, July) — A week-long festival in a cluster of small villages in the Balaton Highlands, transforming rural Hungary with theatre, music, dance, and visual art. Genuinely unusual and beloved by Hungarians.

Budapest Christmas Markets (December) — The markets at Vörösmarty Square and around St. Stephen's Basilica are among the finest in Central Europe. Mulled wine (forralt bor), chimney cakes, hand-crafted goods, and ice skating rinks. The Basilica's light show alone is worth a winter trip.
