The main square of Győr's historic centre is surrounded by fine Baroque facades on three sides, with the Benedictine church of St. Ignatius (formerly Jesuit) and the former Carmelite monastery flanking the long axis. It's the hub of city life — café tables spread across the cobblestones in summer, and the Christmas market here in December is one of the better ones in western Hungary.
The square has been pedestrianised and is pleasant to sit in at any time of day. The buildings themselves repay a slow walk: the facades are detailed and varied, and the ground-floor arcades shelter good shops and cafés. From the square's eastern end you get a direct sightline up to Káptalandomb and the cathedral tower above.
