Cseresznyés Étterem

Cseresznyés is a long-established Kecskemét restaurant in a vaulted cellar off the southwest corner of the main square, with brick walls, wooden beams, and a quietly old-fashioned air. The menu is firmly Hungarian: goose-leg confit with red cabbage, beef pörkölt with hand-pinched egg dumplings, sour cherry soup, Somlói galuska for pudding. Portions are generous and the prices, even by Hungarian standards, are friendly.

The wine list is short but well chosen, with bottles from the nearby Kiskunság vineyards alongside the Tokaj and Eger heavyweights. Service is unrushed and warm. Booking is wise on weekend evenings. The Friday and Saturday set-price three-course menu is a particularly good deal.
