Kiskunság National Park (Bugac)

The Bugac district of Kiskunság National Park is the easiest way to experience the Hungarian Puszta from Kecskemét — about 35 kilometres south of the city, reachable by car in under an hour. The landscape is open, gently undulating grassland with sand dunes and stands of acacia, with shepherds' huts, traditional whip-cracking horsemen displays, and herds of grey cattle and curly-horned racka sheep grazing the plains.

The visitor centre runs daily horseman shows from spring through autumn — the famous csikós on grey horses, performing the five-horse Puszta ride and other tricks — followed by a buffet lunch of plate-bending goulash and pörkölt. It is unashamedly touristic but the horsemanship is genuinely impressive and the landscape is the real Great Plain at its most authentic. There are also marked walking and cycling trails for visitors who want to skip the show.
