Lamberg Castle

The Lamberg Castle is the most prominent building in Mór, a U-shaped baroque palace built between 1762 and 1766 to designs attributed to Jakab Fellner, the same architect who worked at Tata and on parts of the Eszterházy estate at Pápa. Its yellow-washed walls and shallow central courtyard face the parish church across the small main square.

The interior houses the Lamberg Castle Cultural Centre, with occasional exhibitions and concerts in the great hall. The park behind the castle, with old plane trees and a quiet pond, is a pleasant place to sit between cellar visits.

A story
The castle changed hands many times — its baroque shape today owes more to the Lamberg family, who acquired it in 1758, than to any earlier owner. In 1848 the surrounding fields were the site of the Battle of Mór, one of the early defeats of the Hungarian Revolutionary Army.
