Gránit Thermal and Adventure Bath

The Gránit Thermal and Adventure Bath is the reason Zalakaros exists as a destination. The complex is one of Hungary's largest thermal spa facilities, with more than twenty pools fed by mineral-rich water that emerges from depth at 96°C and is cooled before entering the baths. The calcium-magnesium-hydrogen carbonate water is officially certified for treating locomotor disorders, post-surgical rehabilitation, and chronic gynaecological conditions — and the treatments are covered by Hungarian national health insurance for residents.

For visitors without specific ailments, the complex functions as an excellent spa resort. The indoor section operates year-round, with thermal pools of varying temperatures, sauna and steam rooms, and a children's water park. The outdoor adventure section (open in summer) adds a wave pool, water slides, and a lazy river. It is an excellent family destination, and the prices are reasonable by western European standards. The complex is signed from the town centre and within easy walking distance.

A story
The thermal spring was discovered in 1962 by oil prospectors drilling at 2,300 metres. They found no oil but hit water at 96°C. Hungary, already accustomed to finding thermal water rather than petroleum in its subsurface, converted the discovery into a spa within a decade — one of the more useful accidents in the country's geological history.
