Whale Watching from Hauganes

Whale watching tours operate from Hauganes on Eyjafjörður, about 5 km south of Dalvík. The fjord is one of northern Iceland's most reliable areas for humpback whale sightings in summer, when the whales follow capelin shoals into the fjord. Minke whales and white-beaked dolphins are also commonly seen.

Tours are typically 2-3 hours and run from May through September. Hauganes-based operators tend to be smaller and less crowded than the larger operations at Akureyri or Húsavík. The fishing village setting adds atmosphere. Hauganes, Eyjafjörður.

A story
Hauganes is a small fishing village a few kilometres south of Dalvík, and the whale watching operations based there have an unusually high success rate for humpback whale sightings — partly because the northern end of Eyjafjörður funnels capelin, a small fish that both humpbacks and humans fish intensively, into feeding grounds close to shore. Humpbacks will sometimes breach within a few hundred metres of the boats.
