Caves of Hella

Guided sandstone caves at Ægissíða, carved into the soft rock just outside Hella.

The Caves of Hella are a group of man-made sandstone caves at the old Ægissíða farm, just west of the village. They were used in later centuries for storage and shelter, but their original purpose is still debated, which is part of the attraction.

Tours lead into the cool, carved chambers and explain the marks, niches, and local stories attached to them. They make a good contrast to Iceland's better-known lava caves: softer, stranger, and much more tied to the human history of the south coast.
