Hella

Small South Iceland village on the Rangá river, with caves, salmon water, and highland views.

Hella is a small village on the Ring Road in South Iceland, about 97 km east of Reykjavík. It is quiet, low-rise, and easy to miss if you are driving between bigger-name waterfalls and black-sand beaches. The reason to stop is the setting: the Rangá river runs through town, Hekla sits inland, and the highlands begin to feel close.

The best local sight is the Caves of Hella, a group of man-made sandstone caves at Ægissíða. Their age is debated, but the carved spaces are atmospheric and unlike the lava tubes most visitors expect in Iceland. Nearby Ægissíðufoss is a low, broad waterfall on the Ytri-Rangá, better for lingering than for spectacle.

Hella works best as a slow South Iceland stop: walk the river, ride Icelandic horses, look toward Hekla when the clouds lift, and use the village as a sane base for longer trips into Þórsmörk or Landmannalaugar.
