Brauð & Co

Cult sourdough and cinnamon-bun bakery in a graffiti-covered house behind Hallgrímskirkja

Address Frakkastígur 16

A small bakery in a brightly graffiti-painted house just down the hill from Hallgrímskirkja, Brauð & Co bakes everything on-site each morning using long-fermented sourdough. The cinnamon snail (snúður) is the local favourite and is usually sold out by mid-afternoon; the rye-and-treacle bread is dense and excellent.

There are no seats inside — buy your bun and eat it standing in the sun outside, or carry it to the church lawn. The graffiti front, by Icelandic street artist Sara Riel, makes it the second most-photographed building in the neighbourhood after Hallgrímskirkja itself.
