i8 is Reykjavik's most internationally connected contemporary art gallery, representing some of Iceland's most celebrated artists — Ragnar Kjartansson and Ólafur Elíasson both showed here before becoming globally known — alongside a rotating roster of foreign names.
The space sits on Tryggvagata, on the harbour side of downtown, in a clean white-walled building that feels more like a gallery you'd find in Zurich or Berlin than the edge of the Arctic. Exhibitions change regularly and the programming tends toward conceptual and video work, though painting and sculpture also appear.
Worth checking even if you're not an art buyer — the exhibitions are usually thought-provoking, admission is free, and it's a short walk from the old harbour and Reykjavik's main shopping street.
