A glass honeycomb on the harbour, designed by Henning Larsen with the artist Olafur Eliasson. The facade is built from hundreds of geometric glass cells that reflect the sea, the sky, and the city light, and the effect changes through the day. Construction was nearly abandoned after the 2008 financial crash; the government finished it anyway, which has turned out to be one of the better decisions of that decade.

The lobby is free to wander any time it is open, and worth it just for the views back over the harbour. The concert programme is strong — the Iceland Symphony, the Icelandic Opera, jazz, and visiting acts.

A story
When the 2008 banking crash hit, Harpa was a half-built steel skeleton on the waterfront. Every other private project in Iceland stopped, but the state and city took over Harpa and finished it — partly as a statement that the country was not collapsing into itself.
