LungA Art School and Festival

Artist-run residential art school and annual summer festival that defines Seyðisfjörður's creative reputation

LungA School is an artist-run residential arts institution based in one of the old factory buildings by the harbour. It runs intensive programmes in visual art, music, and creative practice throughout the year, attracting students from across Europe and beyond. The school has been central to the transformation of Seyðisfjörður into one of Iceland's most culturally active small towns — a disproportionate number of Icelandic artists have some connection to it.

The annual LungA Festival in late June or early July brings together the school community, visiting musicians, and the town itself for a week of concerts, art openings, workshops, and general creative spillover. It is small enough to feel intimate and large enough to have genuine energy. Even outside festival time the school's presence is visible: studios are often open, work is displayed around the harbour, and the café associated with it is a good place to meet the people who have chosen to live and work in this remote fjord.

A story
LungA was founded in 2003 as a one-week summer gathering of artists and musicians. It grew by word of mouth into one of Iceland's most distinctive cultural events — partly because Seyðisfjörður itself, reached by one dramatic road over a mountain pass, creates a natural sense of arrival and enclosure that suits an artistic community. The school now runs year-round programmes, but the summer festival remains the beating heart of it.
