Smyril Line Ferry Terminal

Iceland's only international ferry port, connecting to Denmark and the Faroe Islands

The Smyril Line ferry Norröna docks in Seyðisfjörður once a week on its route between Hirtshals in Denmark, Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands, and Iceland. The arrival and departure of the ferry — a large ship by the standards of this small fjord — is one of the defining events of the town's week. In summer the dock fills with campervans and motorcycles, their riders taking their first or last steps on Icelandic soil.

For travellers arriving by ferry, Seyðisfjörður is a memorable introduction to Iceland — the mountains closing in on both sides, the waterfalls on the approach road, the compact wooden town at the fjord head. Watching the Norröna manoeuvre out of the fjord in the evening, with the cliffs turning pink in the late light, is one of the more cinematic experiences the East Fjords offers. The ferry terminal area has a small café and services for new arrivals.
