Ytri-Tunga Beach

Ytri-Tunga is a small beach on the south coast of Snæfellsnes that is one of the most reliable places in Iceland to see grey seals at close range. The animals haul out on the rocks at the beach year-round, and at low tide twenty or more seals may be resting on the flat rocks within metres of the shoreline path. They are entirely unbothered by visitors who approach quietly.

The beach is accessed from a farm track; parking is at the farmhouse where a small entrance fee is requested. The beach itself is sandy and the seals use both the beach and the rocks at the sea edge. Some visitors see pups in summer, which are notably more curious about humans than the adults. The seals at Ytri-Tunga are habituated to regular human presence and can be observed from very close range — a stark contrast to seal encounters elsewhere in Iceland where the animals are more wary. Bring binoculars anyway for better observation of their underwater behaviour in the shallow bay.
