The Norwegian House — Norska húsið in Icelandic — is the oldest timber-framed building in Iceland, built in 1832 by a Norwegian merchant and restored to serve as a local history museum and cultural centre. The building stands in the harbour area and is recognisable by its distinctive wooden construction, unusual in a country that has historically built in turf and stone.
The museum covers the history of Stykkishólmur and the Snæfellsnes region, including the town's history as a trading post and fishing harbour. The building itself is the main attraction — it's among the best-preserved examples of 19th-century Norwegian timber construction outside Norway, and the restoration has been careful. The setting on the waterfront makes it a natural first stop when exploring the harbour area.
