Moone High Cross stands east of Athy, a remarkable early-medieval carved cross reassembled after being found in pieces in the 19th century. At around seven metres high, it has real presence even for travelers who have seen other Irish high crosses.
It is outside Athy rather than in the town centre, but it belongs naturally to a south Kildare day. Combine it with Athy if you have a car or bike and want a stronger historical stop than the town alone can provide.
