Athy

Barrow river town in County Kildare, tied to Shackleton, canals, and medieval south Kildare

Athy sits where the River Barrow and the Barrow Navigation pass through south County Kildare. It is not polished in the way Kildare town or Kilkenny can be, but it has a clear identity: river, canal, market town, and the memory of Ernest Shackleton, born nearby at Kilkea.

The town centre is compact, with White's Castle guarding the bridge and the Shackleton Museum giving Athy its strongest story. The Barrow towpath is the best way to slow the visit down, especially if you are cycling or walking between canal towns.

Athy is a borderline day-trip choice, but it earns a small World66 page because it combines Shackleton, river travel, and nearby early-medieval sites such as Moone High Cross. It works best for travelers already moving between Kildare, Carlow, and Kilkenny.
