Fitzgerald's is the pub that appeared as the central gathering place in the BBC television series Ballykissangel, which was filmed in Avoca in the 1990s. The series ran for six seasons and made the village internationally known; Fitzgerald's became one of the most visited pubs in Ireland as a result. It has leaned into the connection ever since, with photographs and memorabilia from the show decorating the walls.
The pub is a perfectly decent village local regardless of its television history — the Guinness is well kept and the welcome is warm. On summer afternoons it fills with visitors who have made the pilgrimage from Dublin for the day. If you have never seen Ballykissangel, the connection is minor; if you have, this is reason enough to visit Avoca.
