St Mary's Church

St Mary's Church is a Gothic Revival Church of Ireland building on the eastern edge of Carrigaline, set in a graveyard with views over the surrounding countryside. The church dates from 1892 and was designed by Cork architect George Coppinger Ashlin in a confident Victorian interpretation of medieval Gothic.

The building is worth a look for the exterior stonework and the peaceful churchyard setting. The grounds include graves from the 18th century and earlier, reflecting Carrigaline's long history as a parish centre before modern development transformed it into a commuter town.

A story
The church sits on a site that has been used for Christian worship since medieval times. The current Gothic Revival building dates from 1892 and was designed by the Cork architect George Coppinger Ashlin, who was responsible for dozens of Irish churches in the latter half of the 19th century. It replaced an earlier structure and served the Church of Ireland (Anglican) community of Carrigaline parish. The churchyard contains grave markers going back several centuries, including some relating to the Cork Harbour maritime community.
