Brú Ború Cultural Centre

The Brú Ború Heritage Centre sits at the foot of the Rock of Cashel and focuses on Irish traditional music, dance, and storytelling. During summer evenings (June to September, Tuesday to Saturday) it stages live performances of traditional music and dance that draw on the living traditions of County Tipperary — not a touristy set-piece but a genuine showcase of what Comhaltas musicians and dancers actually do. The performances last about ninety minutes and tickets are reasonably priced.

The centre also has a small underground theatre, exhibition spaces on Celtic heritage, and a research archive of traditional music. During the day it functions as a cultural visitor centre open to all. The café is decent. The combination of Brú Ború in the evening and a walk up to the Rock at last light makes for the best possible use of time in Cashel.

A story
Brú Ború — the name means "Palace of Brian Boru" — is operated by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, the main organisation preserving and promoting traditional Irish music. Brian Boru, the High King of Ireland who died at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, was crowned at Cashel in 978, which gives the cultural centre a direct link to the Rock above.
