Dereenataggart Stone Circle

Dereenataggart Stone Circle stands on a hillside about 1.5 km northwest of Castletownbere, close enough to reach on foot if the weather is fair. Eight stones remain upright, with several more fallen or broken, and the setting is as much of the appeal as the archaeology: rough pasture, Beara hills and the harbour below.

It is a small site, not a grand managed monument. That works in its favour. You arrive by narrow lanes, find the stones in the open landscape, and get a quick sense of how densely prehistoric Beara is layered.
