When to Go

Connemara is accessible year-round but the Atlantic weather makes a significant difference. Rain is possible any month, but the frequency and intensity vary.

May and June are often the best months: the evenings are long (full daylight until 10pm in June), the hills are clear more often than in autumn, and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. Temperatures are cool but pleasant for walking — 15–18°C.

July and August are busiest, especially around Kylemore Abbey and Clifden. The Connemara Pony Show in August draws a large crowd. Accommodation books up. The weather is no more reliable than the rest of the year — a week of sun in Connemara is genuinely memorable, but do not plan your trip around it.

September and October bring the best light for photography — low sun, dramatic cloud, and the heather turning the hillsides purple and gold. Fewer visitors, though sea-facing areas can get genuinely ferocious Atlantic storms.

November to April is quiet. Some cafes and smaller places close. The mountains can be snowy above 400 metres. But there are days of extraordinary winter clarity when the quartzite peaks glitter against the blue sky and you have the landscape entirely to yourself.
