Archbold's Castle

Twelfth-century tower house across the street from Dalkey Castle

Archbold's Castle sits directly across Castle Street from Dalkey Castle and was built by the same family in the same period — one of the seven fortified merchants' houses that once lined the village. Three storeys of dark stone rise straight from the pavement, complete with a battered base and the narrow slit windows of a working stronghold.

The interior is not normally open to the public, but the exterior is the most photographed corner of Dalkey, and the contrast between the medieval tower and the everyday traffic of the village is part of its charm.
