The higher of the two hills that close off the southern end of Dublin Bay, Killiney Hill rises to 153 metres and is crowned by a stepped granite obelisk built in 1742 by the local landowner John Mapas to provide work during a famine winter. The summit is a few minutes' steep climb from the car park and is one of the best viewpoints in the Dublin area.
The hill is part of a public park with looping woodland paths, wedge-tomb remains near the obelisk, and a small wishing stone that locals walk around clockwise three times for luck. Combine the walk with a descent to Killiney Beach on the far side, or with Dalkey Hill and the old quarry next door.
