Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher rise to 214 metres at their highest point and stretch for eight kilometres along the Clare coast south of Doolin. The most dramatic section is near O'Brien's Tower at the southern end, where the cliff edge is sheer and the drop to the Atlantic surf below is vertiginous. On windy days the spray reaches the top.

Walking from Doolin south to the cliffs along the cliff-edge path takes about 45 minutes and is far better than arriving by tour bus. The official visitor centre at the southern end has become very busy, but the northern approach from Doolin is quieter and gives you the cliffs in their proper context — with no car park in sight.

A story
The cliffs were used as the Cliffs of Insanity in the 1987 film The Princess Bride, which gave them a second life in popular culture entirely separate from their geological drama. On a clear day, you can see the Aran Islands, the Twelve Bens in Connemara, and Loop Head to the south — a combined view across three counties and one of the finest coastal panoramas in Europe.
