Spire of Lloyd

Hilltop 18th-century folly with a viewing balcony over the Meath countryside.

The Spire of Lloyd is a 30-metre Doric column on a hill west of town, built around 1790 in memory of Sir Thomas Taylor. It is often described as a lighthouse, though the sea is far away; folly is the better word.

If the tower is open, the spiral stair leads to a viewing balcony over Kells and the surrounding countryside. The landscaped grounds also include the Paupers' Grave, a reminder of the famine years when destitute people camped on the hill.
