Kells

County Meath town whose abbey once guarded the Book of Kells.

Europe > Ireland > Kells

Kells is a small County Meath town with a large early Christian shadow. The Book of Kells is now in Trinity College Dublin, but the monastery that guarded it for centuries still shapes the town: a round tower, high crosses, a stone oratory, and churchyard lanes that make the centre feel older than its shopfronts.

The best visit is simple. Start around Abbey of Kells, look for the high crosses, then cross to the Courthouse Tourism and Cultural Hub for the Market Cross and local context. If you have time, walk out to the Spire of Lloyd, a strange hilltop folly with broad views over the Meath countryside.

Kells is not a substitute for Dublin's manuscript room, and it is better for people who enjoy fragments than polished museum drama. But if you are already in the Boyne Valley, it has enough monastic stone, odd history, and quiet town texture to justify a day.
