Casino Model Railway Museum

The Casino Model Railway Museum in the Malahide Castle grounds houses the Fry Model Collection, one of the most significant collections of model railways in the world. The collection is extraordinarily detailed — working models of Irish trains built to scale, representing decades of railway history from the early 20th century, displayed across several interlocking layouts.

The museum occupies a restored 18th-century cottage. The models include steam locomotives, DART electric units, cargo trains, and the old cross-channel ferries that connected Ireland to Britain. For anyone with even a passing interest in railways or industrial history, it is a genuine pleasure; for serious enthusiasts it is essential. Good for children as well as adults — the trains actually run.

A story
The collection was assembled by Cyril Fry, a Dublin railway enthusiast, between the 1920s and 1960s. Fry was an obsessive craftsman who built many of the models himself to exact scale. When he died in 1982 the collection went to the National Transport Museum, which eventually moved it to Malahide, where it is now displayed in the restored Casino cottage building within the castle demesne.
