Malahide

Seaside town on Dublin's north coast, centred on a medieval castle and harbour village.

Malahide is an attractive seaside town on the north Dublin coast, about 16 kilometres from the city centre and easily reached by DART train. The centrepiece is Malahide Castle, a medieval tower house set in extensive parklands that has been in near-continuous use since the 12th century — the Talbot family lived here for almost 800 years. The castle grounds include the Talbot Botanic Gardens, a butterfly house, and a model railway exhibition.

The village itself has a pleasant main street with independent shops, good restaurants, and a harbour that fills with sailing dinghies in summer. The estuary is a bird sanctuary, and the coastal walk north to Portmarnock along Velvet Strand is a favourite local outing. Malahide makes a good half-day trip from Dublin, or a quieter base if you prefer staying outside the city.

Eating Out

Malahide has a good density of restaurants for a town its size, mostly clustered along the main street and the marina. It benefits from proximity to Dublin's restaurant scene without quite having the prices.
