Velvet Strand is a long, flat, sandy beach between Malahide and Portmarnock, reached by walking south along the coast from the castle grounds or from Portmarnock itself. At low tide it stretches wide and pale, with the sea pulling back to reveal fine sand that earns the beach its name. It is popular with locals for walking and running year-round, and with swimmers in summer when the water warms to tolerable temperatures.
The beach faces east across the Irish Sea, which means good morning light and a clear view to Lambay Island offshore. Portmarnock Golf Club occupies the headland at the southern end — one of Ireland's best links courses, though access is members and guests only. The beach itself is open to everyone.
