The south campus of Maynooth University occupies the historic seminary grounds and wraps around the castle ruins, giving it an unusual architectural depth for an Irish university. Wander through the formal gardens, past the 19th-century Gothic quadrangles of St Patrick's College, and out to the canal at the edge of the grounds. The National Science Museum sits on this campus — a small but worthwhile collection of scientific instruments, including Victorian physics apparatus and a working Callan induction coil (the world's first powerful electrical transformer, invented here by priest-scientist Nicholas Callan in the 1830s).
