The Royal Canal passes through Maynooth and its towpath is one of the better easy walks in the county. Head east and you follow a pleasant stretch of water toward Dublin — the Royal Canal Greenway extends all the way to the city, making Maynooth a good starting point for a longer cycling day. Head west and the canal winds through flat Kildare countryside past locks and small stone bridges. The towpath is well-maintained and mostly flat. Maynooth railway station sits just beside the canal, which makes it simple to walk one way and catch the train back.
