Monaghan's food scene is small but better than it has any right to be. Andy's Bar and Restaurant on Market Street is the long-running town favourite — solid Irish cooking, big helpings, a properly old-fashioned bar at the front. The Squealing Pig does pub food a notch above the usual: good steaks, decent fish, big plates of chips. For coffee and cake, Coffee Brewz on Mill Street is the most reliable. For something a bit more ambitious, head out to Restaurant 19 at Concra Wood Golf Club near Castleblayney, 20 minutes south, which is one of the best restaurants in the border counties.
